The data that launched school chaplaincy in the USA

NSCA’s school chaplaincy data from 23 countries helped establish “The Texas Chaplain Act,” codifying chaplains in Texas Public Schools. This historic legislation was signed into law on June 18th, 2023. In 2024 other states filed and passed their own “School chaplain bills,” including Florida and Louisiana.

NSCA’s data is further validated by results from our military and other US institutions. Chaplains have proven their unique value by serving our country for over 200 years.

DO CHAPLAINS REPLACE COUNSELORS?

Chaplains do not replace the role of licensed professional counselors. Every institution that employs chaplains also employs counselors; the roles complement each other and do not compete. If utilizing a counselor alone provided complete and holistic care of staff and employees, why do all these institutions also hire chaplains?

DO CHAPLAINS REPRESENT THE CHURCH?

Chaplains do not represent the church; they represent God. A chaplain’s goals are very different from those of a pastor. A pastor’s goal is to get you to come to church. A chaplain has no such goal, as they represent the institution they are employed by and serve under the policies enacted by the institution itself. Chaplains provide consent-based holistic care to all people no matter their beliefs.

Chaplaincy isn’t a new or experimental idea; it’s a proven role administered in every U.S. Sector.

Scientific studies adopted by the U.S. Army show the necessity of spiritual health

In 2021, the U.S. Army implemented chaplaincy care for spiritual and mental health in its strategic readiness program. American professor and clinical psychologist Dr. Lisa Miller conducted this groundbreaking research, which was adopted as the “Chaplain’s Initiative.”
